LEVEL 3 — 🎞️ FILM BUFF

We begin this quiz with a 1936 screwball comedy. My Man Godfrey is an American film directed by Gregory La Cava, based on Eric Hatch's 1935 novel 1101 Park Avenue. The story follows a wealthy woman who takes in a homeless man and gives him a job as her family's butler, eventually falling in love with him. Carole Lombard plays the wealthy and eccentric Irene Bullock, and we are looking for the actor who plays Godfrey. The two leads had great chemistry on screen, perhaps because they were also a couple in real life for two years and had a life that was somewhat similar to the one in the film, according to the actor himself.

Here we have an unusual Israeli-Palestinian collaboration. This 2008 drama was directed by Eran Riklis and co-written by Suha Arraf. It stars Hiam Abbass, Ali Suliman, Danny Leshman and Rona Lipaz-Michael. The story follows a Palestinian widow who goes to court to protect her family's property from her new neighbor, the Israeli Defense Minister. At the same time, a human bond develops between her and the minister's wife.

The story is loosely based on a real case involving the Israeli Defense Minister at the time, Shaul Mofaz. The case reached the Supreme Court of Israel, where the Palestinian family eventually lost the legal battle. The film had its world premiere in the Panorama section of the 58th Berlin International Film Festival. Riklis had already explored personal relationships between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East in his earlier films The Syrian Bride and Cup Final.

High Fidelity is a 2000 romantic comedy-drama directed by Stephen Frears and starring John Cusack, along with Jack Black, Lisa Bonet, Joelle Carter, Joan Cusack, Sara Gilbert, Iben Hjejle, Todd Louiso, Lili Taylor, Natasha Gregson Wagner, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Tim Robbins. Based on Nick Hornby's 1995 novel of the same name, the film moves the story from London to Chicago and changes the name of the main character. It became a big success and gained a strong following. In 2020, a television series based on the film and the novel was released, starring Zoë Kravitz, Lisa Bonet's daughter.

We move on to a film where the great Sherlock Holmes is 93 years old and struggling to remember the details of his final case, as his mind slowly begins to fail him. Mr. Holmes (2015) was directed by Bill Condon, with music by Carter Burwell. The film was originally titled A Slight Trick of the Mind, after the Mitch Cullin novel on which it was based.

This question is about the final film of the legendary Edward G. Robinson, the 1973 dystopian thriller Soylent Green. Robinson had begun his career during the silent film era and, near the end of his life, he was almost completely deaf. He could not hear the other actors or even the director when he called "Cut!". Robinson knew that he was dying of cancer, but kept it secret from the cast and crew. He knew this would be his final film, and his death scene was the last scene he ever filmed. He died just ten days after the filming was completed.

The film was based on Harry Harrison's novel Make Room! Make Room!, but made an important change to the origin of Soylent. It also presents an extreme form of misogyny that was not in the original novel, something that has been interpreted as a possible reaction to the feminist movement and activism of the 1960s and 1970s.

Passing through a quiet town, a train driver finds a bra caught on his train and sets out to find its owner, like a fairy-tale prince searching for the woman who left behind her glass slipper. This beautiful and unusual film was directed by German filmmaker Veit Helmer and features Serbian actor Predrag Miki Manojlovic, French actor Denis Lavant, Spanish actress Paz Vega, Russian actress Chulpan Khamatova, Romanian actress Maia Morgenstern and Bulgarian actress Irmena Chichikova.

We are looking for a play that opened on Broadway on December 3, 1947, and went on to become one of the most important and influential works in American theater. The first Broadway production was produced by Irene Mayer Selznick, the daughter of Louis B. Mayer and the wife of David O. Selznick. Jessica Tandy was chosen for the main female role, after the playwright himself had noticed her when he saw her perform in his one-act play Portrait of a Madonna.

Choosing the young man who would play opposite her, however, became a point of disagreement. The playwright believed that, at only 23 years old, he looked too young for the character, and that his cruelty and wickedness could easily be blamed on the lack of knowledge and experience of youth. Despite this, the production went ahead, became a success and was well received. The role later went to Uta Hagen, with Anthony Quinn opposite her. It is also worth noting that the female role had originally been written for Tallulah Bankhead, who eventually played it in 1956. Since then, the role has been played by many great actresses, including Rosemary Harris, Geraldine Page, Blythe Danner, Jessica Lange, Glenn Close, Natasha Richardson, Cate Blanchett, Rachel Weisz and Gillian Anderson.

Handsome Harry (2009) is an American drama directed by Bette Gordon and written by Nicholas T. Proferes. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2009. It follows a Vietnam veteran who receives a phone call from an old friend from the Navy, who is dying and asks him to find one of their former comrades and ask him for forgiveness for something that happened about 30 years earlier. The film is not simply a mystery about what happened back then, but mainly about how an event from their youth continues to shape these men's lives thirty years later.

Rambling Rose is a 1991 American drama directed by Martha Coolidge and written by Calder Willingham, based on his 1972 novel of the same name. The film was produced by Renny Harlin, with music by Elmer Bernstein. It tells the story of a woman trying to survive and find her place in a society that looks at her with suspicion, while also showing how her presence changes the way a young boy named Buddy sees the world.

In this question, we are looking for the title of a bitter, harsh and quiet film that Akira Kurosawa began making after the Americans left Japan following seven years of occupation. The script was partly inspired by Leo Tolstoy's novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich and was written by Kurosawa together with Shinobu Hashimoto and Hideo Oguni. His collaboration with Oguni began with this film and continued for at least ten more films, all the way to Ran in 1985.

Kurosawa and Hashimoto had already worked together on Rashomon and later reunited for Seven Samurai (1954), I Live in Fear (1955), Throne of Blood (1957) and The Hidden Fortress (1958). The film explores themes such as learning how to live, the inefficiency of bureaucracy and the decline of family life in Japan. Death is at the heart of the story, leading the main character, Watanabe, to question his life and search for the true meaning of his existence.

Kurosawa is widely considered the most influential Asian filmmaker. Western directors studied his work and continue to borrow from and remake his ideas to this day. The most recent remake is Oliver Hermanus's Living (2022), starring Bill Nighy.

A film that was banned in many parts of the world, and in some places remained banned until the new millennium. The Last House on the Left (1972) was Wes Craven's directorial debut, if we do not count the porn films he made earlier under the pseudonym "Abe Snake." Craven never expected such extreme reactions from audiences, with reports of people vomiting, fainting and even one rumored heart attack during early screenings. The film also came two years before the modern American slasher trend, which began with films such as Black Christmas (1974) and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).

Damage is a 1992 romantic psychological drama directed and produced by Louis Malle, starring Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche and Miranda Richardson. Based on Josephine Hart's 1991 novel, the film follows a British politician whose life is turned upside down when he begins a secret affair with his son's fiancée. What starts as an attraction soon becomes a dangerous obsession.
